As per the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), the classification of a mineral production establishment is based on its main activity. What Is an Establishment?
Is the smallest operating unit capable of reporting a specified range of basic industrial statistics of economic production (essentially employment data and the elements of input and output necessary to calculate a measure of value added). In this Census, it is usually a mine, or mine/mill, quarry or sand pit operation.
