Note to readers

Beginning with reference year 2019, Statistics Canada is responsible for the collection, processing and release of mineral and metal production statistics under the Statistics Act. Statistics Canada’s Table 16-10-0022 presents these statistics for over 75 products from the mining industry.

Data for Quebec are collected by the Institut de la statistique du Québec. Quantities of secondary aggregates, specifically stone and sand and gravel, for Newfoundland and Labrador are provided by The Department of Industry, Energy and Technology of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Historical data for reference years 1990 to 2018 are available through the dropdown above.

Publication Changes

Some products that were historically included in Natural Resources Canada's publication of mineral production are now collected and published by Statistics Canada through other, separate surveys.

These products include the following:

  • Aluminum, bismuth, cadmium, indium, selenium, sulphuric acid and tellurium – Data for these products can be found in the Monthly Survey of Smelters and Metal Refineries, which is released in Statistics Canada’s Table 16-10-0019-01.
  • Elemental sulphur – Data on elemental sulphur can be found in Statistics Canada's Table 25-10-0036-01, which provides data on natural gas liquids and sulphur products from processing plants.
  • Coal – Information on coal can be found in Statistics Canada’s Monthly Coal Supply and Disposition Survey (Table 25-10-0046-01).

Exclusion threshold

For reference years from 2019 to 2023, an establishment is excluded if the production value is less than $10,000. For Quebec, the Institut de la Statistique du Québec did not apply an exclusion threshold for reference years from 2019 to 2023.

Ilmenite

Historically NRCan published ilmenite concentrates as “Ilmenite”. Starting in reference year 2019, the published data changed to recoverable ilmenite to be consistent with Statistics Canada’s publication.

Iron, agglomerates; Iron, concentrates

Starting in reference year 2019, iron ore is separated into iron, concentrates and iron, agglomerates to be consistent with Statistics Canada's publication.

Platinum group

The platinum group includes iridium, palladium, platinum, rhodium and ruthenium.

Titanium dioxide

Starting in reference year 2019, titanium dioxide is reported as a metal to be consistent with Statistics Canada’s publication. Refer to the non-metal 1990 – 2018 tables for historical values.

Potash, muriate of potash (MOP); Potash, potassium oxide (K2O)

Starting in reference year 2019, potash quantities are published as muriate of potash (MOP) and potassium oxide (K₂O). Shipment values are only published for muriate of potash (MOP) to avoid duplication.

Salt

The salt group includes fine vacuum salt, in brine salt and rock salt.

Clay

Starting in reference year 2019, Clay is a new addition to the aggregates table.

Lime

The lime group includes quicklime and hydrated lime.

Sand and gravel

The sand and gravel group includes silica sand, quartz crude and quartz milled as well as gravel (natural/crushed) and natural sand. Starting in reference year 2019, quartz (silica) is included in sand and gravel to be consistent with Statistics Canada’s publication.

Stone

The stone group includes granite, limestone, marble, sandstone, shale and slate.
